An infant at the time of birth is completely sterile. During the delivery, all the infant's body becomes colonised with bacteria, which have protective functions and which will remain on and into the body for the child's whole life.
It seems incredible, but we live immersed in bacteria. In fact we have 10 "good bacteria" for every cell in our body. This huge quantity of bacteria, which may be found in the oronasopharingeal cavity, gastrointestinal tract, urogenital tract and on the skin, represents our “microbiota”.
The composition and the function of microbiota in the different habitats of the human body play a fundamental role in its physiology, immunity and nutrition. The first colonisation is experienced at birth, when the baby passes through the vaginal canal and thus inherits some good (and bad) bacteria from the mother. The intestinal tract is further colonized by the mother’s microbiota through her milk and by other environmental sources. The intestinal microflora is essential for the digestion and for the assimilation of nutrients. Gut microbiota alterations during such a critical maturational period may be linked to the development of various intestinal discomforts such as: colics, abdominal pain, cramps, excess gas, bloating, change in bowel habits and inflammatory conditions.
